tools & resources

  • Text Editors: the swiss-army-knife of digital media. It is not so fancy but it is extremely useful. Here are two that are small and efficient:
  • Raster-based image editors: Photoshop was revolutionary but there are other alternatives that are free / open and quite powerful:
    • GIMP – the classic, very capable and well maintained
    • Krita – more oriented towards illustrative / drawing / painting workflows but quite capable (also runs on Android)
  • Editors and Tools specially for low-fi or retro-style pixel art:
    • GrafX2 – super old-school – it's 30 years old and still works!
    • Piskel – quite advanced online pixel art editor
    • rx – a more modern but minimalist pixel editor (install may require hacking)
    • nasu – a minimal editor from our friend Devine – contact him if you need help
    • pattern mutation tool – not an editor but creates interesting pixel patterns
  • Vector image Editors:
    • Inkscape - a very capable, extendable editor for vector formats
